Lexar Homes brings new design ideas to Woodland

With the economy and the home market still struggling in areas across the country, Jason Tomasli and Lexar Homes are bringing modern home design to Woodland and Southwest Washington.

Tomasli, who’s been involved in the home design business for over 10 years, is excited to join the company and open up their new branch office.

“I think this may be the smartest decision I ever made,” Tomasli said. “Lexar has some exciting innovations and design practices that go against the traditional ‘rack, stack and pack’ methods which have been used in the past.”

One of the major challenges facing Tomasli and other designers is their customers have become a lot more educated than they were before the economic downturn.

“That’s not to suggest they weren’t before, but the drop in housing market and seeing so many people in trouble right now has made new customers do more research and be more aware of their options,” Tomasli said. “They’re looking for the best deal and to not be nickel and dimed.”

As the drive to create more sustainable and environmentally-friendly homes becomes more prominent, Tomasli said building quality homes is a process from the designer on down.

“We’re actually in the study of building science, which not a lot of companies are doing,” Tomasli said. “In talking to my clients, one of the first questions I ask them is how long would they like their home to last, because it’s a big long-term investment.”

To that end, Lexar Homes strives to build homes that go beyond standard building codes in trying to make them more efficient and durable.

Lexar offers several different floor plans and sizes of homes, ranging in price from $53,000-220,000, as well as garage and storage spaces for lower prices.

“We regularly try to go above the code and we work to empower the contractors, subcontractors, designers, builders, and other companies we work with to educate them on what we’re trying to do,” Tomasli said. “If you surround yourself with great people who’re on the same page, you’re going to get great results.”

Another facet of Lexar’s strategy is tailoring homes to the environment they’re built in.

“Environment often determines design,” Tomasli said. “In Washington, it’s dealing with both the wind and rain. That means making homes that can stand up to moisture, which not just affects the roof, but also the walls and places where moisture can seep in and cause havoc. So we have to work on making homes that can stand up to that.”

As the market continues to works its way back, Tomasli is excited about the prospects on the horizon, not just for Lexar, but the development of Woodland and Clark County.

“The signs I’ve seen are pointing to the market starting to turn back up, and the area itself has been improving,” Tomasli said. “We’re ready to see how things develop here, but we’re seeing changes to construction loan products, meaning if you have a good job and money saved up, there’s a good chance a home might be more accessible.”

Besides working with homeowners, Tomasli and Lexar are also looking to work with the Woodland community on helping develop other areas.

“We like working with local groups and offering ways to strengthen the community,” Tomasli said. “I like to also sponsor youth sports.”

In addition to Clark County, Lexar Homes services Clickitat, Cowlitz, Pacific, Skamania, and Wahkiakum counties, as well as Northwest Oregon. More information about Jason Tomasli and Lexar Homes can be found at their website, www.lexarhomes.com/office/lexar-homes-woodland.aspx.
